What is Estrogen?
Estrogen is a hormone composed of estrone, estradiol and estriol. It is found in both men and women, but it’s responsible for the development of secondary sex characteristics in women and the menstrual cycle. It is also the main hormone involved in the reproductive system of women.
Any hormone imbalance can wreak havoc on the body, and estrogen is no different. When there is too much estrogen, symptoms can include migraines, high blood pressure and cramps. Recent studies correlate unbalanced estrogen and progesterone level with breast cancer in women and elevated estrogen levels with prostate cancer risk in men.
Foods to Lower High Estrogen
Most studies have correlated cancer incidence with elevated estrogen levels (in men and women). One of the simplest and most effective ways to avoid this is through appetite. There are a number of foods proven to manage hormones in a way that will balance them in the body. They are cruciferous vegetables such as cabbage, broccoli and cauliflower among the best at helping lower estrogen levels when there is too much.
Some people might not enjoy these particular foods, especially the vegetables, but that just means you have to get more adventurous in the kitchen. Sprinkle some in your salad, or experiment with different ways to cook broccoli by including them in your recipes i.e. grilled chicken pasta with broccoli or this broccoli salad.
