Can the Military Force me to Take Cholesterol Lowering Medications?

Short answer: no. The military doesn’t have the authorization to force you to take anything; only a doctor does.

Long answer: When you arrive for basic training, all your civilian medication will be confiscated, including OTC drugs and doctor prescriptions. You’ll be evaluated by military personnel to determine your health concerns. If medication is necessary, they’ll replace your old drugs with military issue.

If you develop a cholesterol problem during your service, you’ll most likely be given the option of seeing a doctor. The two of you can personally discuss your needs and determine if any medication is necessary.

If your cholesterol is a debilitating problem – one that would interfere with your duties as a soldier – you’re already disqualified from service. To join the military you’ll need to file for a health waver and hope for the best.

If nothing else, you always have the option of quitting. If the military tries to pressure you into something you aren’t comfortable with, like extraneous or unneeded medication, the door is always open. You don’t have to worry about being strapped down and forced to endure lower cholesterol.
