This week I’ve found some interesting articles about children, cholesterol and how the Mediterranean diet helps live longer.
How the Mediterranean diet avoid the risk of obesity
During my weekly research, I’ve found a great interview in an Italian news-magazine about healthy foods for children on a diet and how to educate them to avoid obesity. The people interviewed is a famous Italian dietist that gives useful tips and advices. The interview is in Italian, so I’ve tried to used the online translator.
Educate your children to defeat obesity
In this article [Translated] by Antonio Migliaccio [Translated] there is a focus on how the children’s obesity and overweight are becoming almost epidemic. The overweight has an incidence of 20% in the total Italian children.
We can clearly say that is an eating disorder that turns into disease and that brings with it other serious diseases from diabetes to hypertension, risk of stroke.
What are the best antidotes obesity?
- First, a continuous food education, not stopping at one or two days a year of awareness.
- Then the creation of reference centers for problems associated with weight.
- Then need careful monitoring of food commercials that go on TV: they must be more clear and concrete and say exactly the amount of sugar and fat present in the products advertised.

A Brain-Boosting Diet that Also Prolongs Life
A Mediterranean diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains may help people with Alzheimer’s disease live longer than those who eat a more traditional Western diet.
The findings bolster a growing body of evidence that the traditional diet from Italy, Greece, and other countries that lie along the Mediterranean Sea— high in fiber and heart-healthy fats like olive oil, along with moderate amounts of red wine and little red meat — are good for the body and brain and may promote longevity and cognitive health.
Increase HDL Cholesterol and Live Longer
A Mediterranean-style diet, rich in fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, olive oil and legumes, is strongly linked to high blood levels of HDL. So is eating more fish (and taking fish oil supplements) and consuming fewer refined carbohydrates.
Several types of fats can also make a big difference.
Most helpful are the monounsaturated fats found in canola, olive, avocado, nut and seed oils; nuts and avocados. Increasing your daily intake soluble fiber is also beneficial. Soluble fiber is found in fruits, vegetables, legumes and oats and whole grain foods.
Moreover it seems the old saying that “vino fa buon sangue” wine makes good bllod is true. Alcohol, particularly red wine, consumed in moderation, helps to raise HDL. More than one or two drinks a day can be very detrimental for your health.
Strict diet not always best way to reduce your triglycerides
In this good article by Dr. Peter Gott, He answer some question from a couple that follow the Mediterranean diet. The lady wants more info because recently she had a blood work done, and the results were high (triglycerides 323).
Her doctor told her to take alcohol and sugar out of diet as well as pasta, bread and cereal. They have been following the Mediterranean diet for years, and her husband doesn’t want to give up pasta.
Here what the answer of the Doctor:
“I would first suggest that you and your husband begin an exercise program and have your blood fats measured in about a month. Continue your Mediterranean diet. This is a quality-of-life issue in conjunction with an overly strict diet.”
